"As you refuse to convert, you will be tortured. Send her to the BASEMENT." Our hapless prisoner is lead to a dark room where other victims are waiting and told to climb onto a machine, where her feet are attached to pedals by straps and it is requested she sit on a small metal seat the side of a postage stamp. She waits in the dark, when the head torturer arrives and tells our victims to begin pedaling. "Well, I can handle this, even if it is a bit awkward", she thinks. Then our leader shouts "JUMP!" and at once the other prisoners begin rapidly pedaling while standing for a few seconds and down again on the horrible seat. The pain is intense and the heavy breathing is audible. "If you are doing this correctly, I will see bodies in the aisles when I'm done!" the torturer shouts. (actual quote). Then we are told we must "run", so we stand on our devices and pedal, oh, do we pedal for 2 minutes, while she counts down the time....40 seconds, 30...20...sweet Jesus....10 and then sit. Oh, the seat feels better than a feather bed. How she could sit here for hours and just pedal...so nice, so nice...and then "JUMP! We are done with the easy stuff, let's go to work!"
"To ANYTHING....Everything!!! Just make it stop...." She is led from the room, sobbing, weak, and shaking. "See you next week!" The lead Inquisitor calls joyfully from the back of the room. I was chosen to try Truly Radiant Rejuvenating Toothpaste, Spinbrush and Mouthwash. I received these products free of charge. Smiley is the website to go for the best offers.
I enjoyed the bright freshness of both toothpaste and mouthwash, but best of all is the spinbrush. No batteries required or annoying buzz, just gently moves on its own, giving you a nicer feel. The brush will definitely be on my shopping list from now on!
Opinions are 100% my own. To be honest, we recently switched to butter, because of the fake ingredients in most spreads. I was happy to see that ICBINB made their products with more natural ingredients. The taste is as good as ever and we will be using it again.
My hubby is the lead, Tevye, my oldest is Chava, my next oldest DAUGHTER is playing a boy, (she's thrilled with the part), and my son is the beggar. I do not act. I prefer to be anonymous in most things. There is an old saying, "A lady should be in the papers only 3 times in her life, birth, marriage, death." I tend to subscribe to that. However, it does fall to me to host a cast party and also one more party, which brings me to my latest challenge.
The last night of the play, my husband and I decided that it would be nice to have those friends of ours who purchased tickets for that showing to join us back at the house for food and cocktails. Now, I love that idea, but originally it appeared to only be two other families. Now, it appears to be most of the people we know in town! I am very used to hosting big gatherings, don't get me wrong, but as you know, I tend to have a bit more time to organize it.

Here's my first challenge: Since I will be at the last showing, I will have to have all my dishes prepared and ready to serve at once. My husband thinks it best if we just order pizza to save time. That is a good idea and brings me to...
Challenge two: I have NO clue how many are coming. I sent out invites, but so many people decide to go to the theater at a moment's notice, so I don't really have a good head count. I always worry about not having enough food. Usually, there is more than enough, but this time, I just can't figure it.
Challenge three: Since we are hosting a cast party only two weeks from now, much of my party budget is already taken. Creativity will be the name of the game. I'm thinking fill 'em up on cheap appetizers before pizza, and cookies for dessert. Hope no one will be disappointed that it is not my usual feast!
All will turn out, I am sure. I just have to work it!foodmom4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17276616020457389424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517743207167974700.post-90087794497705306992013-06-18T14:34:00.001-07:002013-06-18T14:34:13.060-07:00An Etiquette Review May I take this opportunity to remind my lovely readers of something quite important? It is simply this: when receiving an invitation out for lunch or dinner, it is not appropriate to ask to bring an extra guest along. This happened to my daughter recently and it put her in quite a difficult position.
You must understand that YOU are asked to be the guest and the person inviting you will be paying for you. It is a bit rude to expect your host to pay for your guest also. Now, of course, if you mention that you will be paying for the additional guest, I give you a very reluctant nod, however, it still puts your host in a very awkward position and, most likely, that said host will wind up paying for both parties.

Please understand that meals out can be expensive and should be thought of as a special treat for you. Perhaps, the event is meant as a "thank you" for past favors, If not, however, one should try to reciprocate at a later date, either with a home cooked meal or a return engagement out.
I do so hate to lecture you with such trivial matters, but it had been brought to my attention that young ladies of college age may not be aware of such things and so, I take you all to task now. To have a gracious lifestyle, please try to behave graciously.
A princess party for 17 year olds, you ask? Well, my daughter and her friends decided to get a singing group together for the high school's talent show and they all sang songs from Disney movies and arranged the choreography for them. SO, now that school is nearing the end of year, she asked if she could have the group over for a luncheon, as it is a half day today. Of course, I said...SURE!!!!

I am serving mini lunch meat sandwiches on my best porcelain serving trays, mini quiches in a parmesan cheese crust, Virgin Margaritas with glass rims coated in colored salt, Lychee fruit punch, and a lovely strawberry trifle. (see picture). I also have the old stand-bys: Chips and Dip and Dove Chocolates. (I even have back up snacks in the freezer, if needed!)

The girls will watch as many Disney movies as they can before the food runs out. Each girl will get her own tiara and take home her margarita glass.

So, Cheers to another party!

You MUST have basic party prep finished before guests arrive. My best suggestion is have your best friend over to 1/2 hour earlier to help set up. I have been to parties where I am the one setting up, while the host is busy greeting guests. See, greeting your guests must be a priority, however, if you are not yet ready....? Well, you see the dilemma.

7 days before: Intensive house cleaning - scrub baseboards, ceiling fans, hand wash floors.
3 days before: Prepare food list, grocery list and to-do list.
2 days before: Get out all the serving dishes you will use and wash them and place them on dining room table for easy access.
1 day before: All shopping must be finished by this day! The rest of the day should be spent making the dishes that can be made in advance and beginning set up.
Day of: Spot cleaning and finish all prep, including assigning jobs to helpful friends and kids.

By the time your guests arrive, your main job should be filling drinks, seeing that no empty dish is ever left on a table, (My personal pet peeve, I'm a nazi about that.) and chatting. Also, and this is absolute must. Please see that everyone is introduced to one another. Don't invite a houseful of guests that don't know each other and leave them to shuffle around awkwardly until the liquor kicks in.

Don't freak out if you are not perfect. I've made each of these mistakes and that is how I learned for the next time! But do learn from them.

Last tip: Keep Celebrating!foodmom4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17276616020457389424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517743207167974700.post-59115551101128854592013-03-08T10:54:00.001-08:002013-03-08T10:54:42.973-08:00Etiquette Lesson Today, as your 19th Century Lady was driving to the library, (I'm so old-fashioned, I read actual books), I happened to be passed by a funeral procession. I pulled over my vehicle and reflected calmly on the ephemeral nature of human life. As I watched and waited, I noticed that a car across from me was also waiting. Waiting impatiently to get out of a parking lot. So impatiently that the minute there was the slightest opening, this car darted through it and went on it's way.

I was a bit surprised at that lack of decorum, however, then I realized that perhaps many people just do not know the basic etiquette that is part of such an event. I don't think funeral processions are as common as they were back in my day. My husband chose not to have them for his parents, because many years ago a family member taking part in one, had a fatal accident and upon checking the news, I find that such tragedies are happening more often. Due in part, I believe, to ignorance of the rules regarding such processions. So for your edification, I present:

Etiquette for Funeral Processions

1.) Avoid breaking in to a funeral procession.
This is because very often family comes from out of town and you do not want to get in between someone who may be unfamiliar with the area and may get lost.

2.) Don't honk or try to break up a procession when a funeral procession is running a red light.
It is legal for processions to go through the traffic lights. You won't be that inconvenienced if you need to sit through one light. Be polite and respectful. It's the very least you can do for a grieving family.

3.) Pull over if possible.
It has long been considered respectful to pull over. I do this when driving on a smaller street. As we live in a rather big city, it is almost rude to other drivers to do this in all cases, but when possible, please try to do this.

Please understand that I do not live in Miss Manners rarefied world of the upper class, but merely am a day to day old fashioned lady trying to bring gracious living to a reality show millennium.

I love to enter sweepstakes. I simply adore it. I enjoy the rush when you get an email, stating you won, I love the surprise packages in the mail and I love just imagining if I won the big prize! What I don't like is this: Stop with the pitiful comments, people!
See, occasionally a blog contest will ask you to leave a comment about what you'd do if you won a cash prize of a varying amount. I usually say, vacation or new gadget or even luxury coffees. However, invariably some sad sack will state,

"Buy food for my three children" "Buy clothing for my adopted children" "My husband is out of work, we have 8 children, a blind parrot and I have a terrible rash and I need to buy ointment." (okay, I made that last one up, but wait...you'll see it eventually.)

I think people do this because they think they will play the pity card, but a random computer generated pick does not care that your mother-in-law feeds orphan squirrels and needs nut money.

On a side note, end your comments with "Thank you". I do that because my daughter has done giveaways on her blog and they are work. Be polite. It's not going to help you win, but it helps you look like a decent human being, something in short supply from this 19th Century Lady's point of view.

When you win, put a nice comment back up on the blog and then
I recently had an acquaintance tell me that I was a bit of the joke of our circle because I vacuumed every day. Now, please, I'll explain that I do not particularly like this person. (hate the bitch...ooo, sorry, that's not ladylike.) She tends to come at me with all manner of passive-aggressive statements, whereas I tend to be a pretty laid back person. That is until you rile me, then I'm In-Your-Face aggressive. Annnnywaaaysss...I laughed and told her I was rather pleased by that remark, at which she rolled her eyes at me and went talking to the other hippie mom in our group. (Birkenstocks and all, I do not kid.)
Okay, I don't vacuum EVERY day, but I do take pride in my housekeeping skills. I wish I could tell you that she is a working mom, and just has no time to clean, but nope. Not only is she a full time mom, like the rest of the home schools, she isn't really a home schooler. She unschools. I know some that really make that work, but it's not working in this case.
Look, in order to have a stress free live, you must have clean, comfortable surroundings. I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I was an Organizer. I believe it is innate in me to keep things neat. It may not be natural for all of you, but it certainly doesn't help, when peers ridicule you for trying to bring order to your home.
Cleaning is not stupid women's work. It is a noble thing to want to keep your family stress-free and happy. So pick up that dust cloth, put on your favorite music and be proud of yourself! Afterwards, the house will look so lovely, you'll want to invite a few friends over so you can....

Place the chicken pieces in a deep, heavy pot and add the stock. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Skin any froth and scum that forms on the surface. Coarsely chop the vegetables and add them to the pot. Simmer gently for 15 minutes, then season to taste with salt and pepper. Lift out the vegetables with a slotted spoon and place in a food processor fitted with the metal blade. Process to form a thick puree. Stir the puree back into the pot with the chicken and simmer for about 10 minutes longer while making the dumplings.

In a mixing bowl stir together the egg, water, paprika, cayenne, and melted butter. Season with salt. In another bowl, mix together the flour and baking powder, then stir into the egg mixture to form a thick, smooth batter. Stir in the parsley.

Using a large tablespoon drop the dumplings into the simmering stew. Cover the pot and simmer without raising the lid for 15 minutes. Lift out a dumpling to test to see if it is cooked. If it is still floury, re-cover and let cook 3-4 minutes longer.

Oh, my old-fashioned friends, is there any greater pleasure than reading? I was ever so fortunate to receive many books for Christmas along with a few gift cards for book stores. I hope you were just as lucky!
I enjoy the tactile feel of a new book and the nice smell when you open it. I love the atmosphere of a good used book store....all musty and full of information I have yet to discover. Now, your 19th century lady has a confession to make...I own a Kindle Fire. Yes, I do enjoy it. It is very useful when I am waiting for the children at one of their events. I used to have to consider what book to take with me and now...I just take them all in one small electronic device that fits in my pocketbook.
What do you like to read? Right now, I am enjoying a history of England by Peter Ackroyd and to accompany that, I am reading a non-fiction book by Edward Rutherford by the name of Sarum. I am seriously fascinated by the Anglo-Saxon time period, so much that I am teaching myself Old English! Perhaps I shall have to retitle my blog "10th Century Lady" someday!
I do hope that all of you have enjoyed your holidays and I hope that you, above all,

Keep Celebrating!foodmom4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17276616020457389424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517743207167974700.post-17705329726527385242012-12-27T16:25:00.000-08:002012-12-27T16:25:59.938-08:00Afternoon Hosting. I was fortunate enough to be invited to a delightful get-together this afternoon! How wonderful it was to sit and chat informally with friends, while our children played in another room.
I think that afternoon hosting may be just the thing for those of you who are, perhaps, intimidated by a big evening event! May I offer a few ideas? I'd love to think that someone would consider a party, simply because it would seem so fun and inexpensive! No liquor bill!!
First, keep your guest list small. That is tricky for me, because I want to invite the whole world! However, for an afternoon lunch, it's better to have just a few close friends. Keeping in mind, however, that invariably someone will cancel at the last minute, which leads me to my next tip.

If you have guests contribute food to the meal, be sure that it will not be a necessary part of that meal. When they ask what to bring, suggest salads, desserts or appetizers that would not be missed if the guest must cancel.
No fussy food - this is such a plus!! You can have sandwiches or bread puddings or frittatas. Such fun!!!! You could do a light dessert table or simply finger snacks! As for beverages, coffee, tea or soft drinks will fit the bill perfectly!
Don't plan for a long afternoon. These events tend to be no longer than 2-3 hours at the most. You will have your whole evening ahead to do whatever you wish!
Benefits of such events include: quick and easy cleanup, chance to actually visit with your guests and low cost of food and drinks.
So get out the plastic utensils and have a few friends over for omelets!!! And remember,

Keep Celebrating!

Her choir group, Palatine High School's Midnight Blues has been asked to sing at the White House! Very exciting!....for her. I'm feeling a bit lost right now. I guess it is silly, but with all the talk about the devastating tragedy in Connecticut and the stupid end of world stuff, my mind is reeling! I just want to keep her home and safe.

I am intellectually aware that you must let them go out into the world, however emotionally, I want to cover all my children in bubble wrap. Poor daughter, she was patting me and consoling me...gawd, I'm such a wimp. I remember when, as young people, my dad would have to send us off into the world, he was made of tougher stuff. He was concerned, but had that stiff upper lip that men have. My husband included. The only sign that he was going to be worried was when he bought those of us remaining behind, a bunch of fatty Mickey D's for breakfast!

Anyway, I know she'll have an amazing time with this wonderfully talented group of young people. I know she's with very responsible adults and that her choir teacher is experienced in these sort of trips, having done them for years. I guess what I worry about is what I don't know...but I suppose that is what we all worry about...the unknown.

Looking forward to the stories and pictures upon her triumphant return!foodmom4lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17276616020457389424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517743207167974700.post-20120721383592157952012-12-06T08:33:00.000-08:002012-12-06T08:33:24.224-08:00Spoiled Brats Here on St. Nick's Day is the perfect time for this post. My question for you is:
Do you get your kids everything they want for Christmas or do you set limits?
I ask because an article in the Trib yesterday posed this question. It seems many parents are upset because they can't afford to purchase the pricey items, such as Iphones and Ipads for their little darlings. HA! As if I'd even consider something like that!

My children are aware that there is a 100 dollar limit for Christmas. Do they all have their electronic gadgets? Yes, both daughters saved their money for Ipods and my son, well, believe it or not, he actually WON his Ipad from Nick.com last year. He is the only one in the house with one. It is funny how people look at me, thinking how spoiled he must be! None of the kids have fancy phones and they don't have texting. (Well, they do, but we don't encourage it.) Wow, you say, how can they be well adjusted living in such deprived circumstances? Just fine, thank you. Would you believe that I actually get along with my teens and like them very much?!
Look, if you can afford to comfortably buy your kids their heart's desires, I still don't think it is that great of an idea. How can one appreciate the little things when the big things are simply granted. When I grew up, we didn't have much money. My mother passed away when I was very young and my father had to arrange for child care (not easy in those days.) He worked many long hours to pay bills and see that we had all that we needed....NEEDED. A few times his lovely boss sent a delightful gift basket to our house for Christmas. This man's wife was a celebrated hostess in our town and she took special care with these baskets. It had just the things to charm the whole family. They were not extravagant, but had items that were little treats and not something to be afforded on our budget. Oh, how thrilled we were! Ornaments for the tree, (I still have some on my tree yet), Candy and chocolates and other small goodies. I still smile when I think of it. I know, though, that my own kids would not get the same enjoyment, neither would most kids these days.
The simple things are really what make the holidays so enjoyable, so let's not take that away from the next generation. Most of all,

In today's Chicago Tribune, which I read every morning, faithfully, though my husband thinks I'm old-fashioned for doing so, were two columns I'd like to discuss. I cannot do it in one article, so here is my first rant.
In the advice column, a woman wrote that she helps a neighbor with her children and her chores occasionally. Recently this needy neighbor asked if our heroine would drive her daughter back and forth from sport practice, which she happily did. Upon discovering that the reason her services were needed was because "Miss Needy" was at a 15 hour film festival! Of course, one feels dreadfully put upon at that point.
First, let me say, I am NOT "Ask Amy". Mostly because I am extremely cantankerous and opinionated. Political Correctness is not in my vocabulary. I WILL tell you the truth, if you need it, whether or not you think you do. And here's the truth:
WHAT?! You need me to do WHAT? Now look, if you are in chemo, I'm your go-to person, but if you are gallivanting about town, you need to get your butt back home and parent your kids! Personal note: I once had a neighbor who did the same things. True story: she asked me on various occasions:

1.) Did I have any raspberries, because she was going to make muffins and didn't have any. (We live in Chicago, any store is a 5 minute drive away.)

2.) Did I have chicken, she needed some for dinner. (I'm happy to give a cup of sugar or butter, but, PLEASE!)

3.) Can she borrow my car?

4.) Can she use the phone? She forgot to pay her bill and needed to call the utility to restart it. (Okay, but after a long time, I walked in on her sitting in my kitchen chatting to a friend.)

5.) Can she get some ice? (They were having a party to which we were not invited and forgot to get ice.)

6.) Can she have some vinegar for dyeing Easter eggs. (because Easter always just sneaks up on you!)

I used to acquiesce to most of these requests. We were new neighbors with small children. I thought I might need to call in those favors, but she turned out to not be available for any of my requests. Eventually, the straw broke with the ice request. I said I didn't have any ice, which of course, is ridiculous and she knew it. She stopped asking. Whew!
On the other hand, in the same neighborhood lived a young teacher. I didn't know him well, but he waved and chatted when we were outside. One day I answered the doorbell and there he stood, hands covering a very red and watery eye. He told me that he just had Lasik, but something wasn't right and could I take him to his doctor. I said, "Get in the CAR!", loaded up my toddlers and drove him as quickly as the law would allow!

Dear readers, some things you must say "Yes" to regardless of the hassle and some things you must say "No" to regardless of the triviality of the request. Do not be a doormat and do not be a "Miss Needy." Above all:

I just read this wonderful book, Gods Like Us. It follows the movie stars from the early inception of film until modern day. I found the early days the most interesting. I must confess, I don't watch much TV. Oh, I know, everyone says that, but then they follow it up with, "Oh, I can't miss the Walking Dead!" or "Did you see the new Dancing with the Stars?" To which, I must always answer in the negative. The fact that I even know those titles amazes me, but I have recently just been asked those same questions, so I had that covered. Seriously, I don't watch much TV, that is not to say NO TV, because I like the Fox News Channel (Yes, I am an evil Republican), Fox Business Network (I really love the financial world, I missed my true calling with that), and Turner Classic Movies, (Especially when they have the pre-code or silent movies).

You may ask what I have against television and really it's not anything snobbish. It's this: I can't sit still and stare at something that long. Simply cannot. Now I love to read, but I can easily put the book down when I am restless and go do something else. Funny...you'd think I'd be the skinniest thing on the planet!

When my children were young, I told them that the TV sucked their brains out and that if they watched too much they'd be mindless zombies. This was said with a chuckle and a twinkle in my eye, so they were not horrified or traumatized. Still they knew there was an ounce of truth to it and none of the kids are TV addicted, (though the jury's still out on my son). Instead of TV for background noise, I'd put on the radio or jazz Cd's. (I like jazz.) I did worry (sometimes still do) that they'd be out of the loop when it came to socializing, but with the Internet, the teens tend to pick up references if necessary. And it seldom is.

I have to be a bit snobbish here, because I do hear about the shows that are on. I saw on Drudge that a new show with hillbillies will be airing rather than that one about New Jersey. There is also a show about a beauty pageant child. I don't get that at all. So, I don't watch TV. Gives me time to plan another get-together. We will have people for New Year's Eve and that will need to be planned soon!
You know, the ones you buy in boutique chocolatiers. Let me tell you, there is a reason they are so expensive! What a task they are to make! However, they will certainly make your friends sit up and take notice! Here is what I do!

Take 4 oranges with a nice thick skin and remove the peel as neatly as possible. Eat the flesh or juice the oranges. I present my hubby with a nice glass of fresh squeezed juice on the morning I make them. Then cut the peel into neat strips. Place the peel into cool water to cover and boil for 5 minutes, drain and do it again...4 more times. Then you make a sugar saturated solution of 1 cup water: 3cups sugar and gently boil the peel for 20 minutes in the solution. Drain the peel and place them separately on a wax-paper covered baking sheet and let them dry for a few hours.

When relatively dry, melt a large block of good quality dark chocolate. This is your biggest expense. I find Trader Joe's brand to be the best quality for the money. I have tried milk chocolate orange peel, but it is just not as good. Okay, once the chocolate is melted, you must cover each strip in the lovely, velvety chocolate. This is the part that is the biggest pain. If you can get your hubby to help or maybe one of the kids, it goes by much quicker. I am fortunate that my middle daughter loves all things domestic and she doesn't even think this is a chore! My husband helped once....once. I don't blame him. Place the peel on a freshly wax covered baking pan and place in the fridge for a bit. Then pack into a cookie tin and dish them out at gatherings or give a few to honored friends.

Everyone will want the recipe, but no one will ever make them, so you will be special!

Oh, I should mention, do NOT skip a step. My sister in law made them once, completely skipping the 20 minutes in the syrup. This is the candying step and, may I tell you, without it you just have ...yuck. Also, you should know, the repeat boiling in fresh water for 5 minutes at a time removes the bitterness of the peel.

One good thing to mention, you can eat them without covering them in chocolate! They are very tasty just candied!

Keep celebrating!
This is a great recipe to make for those cold nights, when you need a bit of comfort. This comes from a website called Group recipes, but I use a puff pastry crust, because everyone prefers it to a standard crust.
The latest community theatre production has been performed. Sigh, time to get back to the regular day to day.
It won't last, however. Christmas cards need to be written, the oldest starts a new play in the next few days, there are still gifts to purchase and a holiday meal to plan, not to mention, we will enjoy a few holiday outings yet, ourselves. (It's so nice when I get to be the guest!)
Today, sitting with my lady friends, while our children had home school classes (there's not much "home" about home schooling.), we discussed our recent family get togethers. The consensus seems to be that family tends to be far more impolite than friends would ever consider being. The saying goes, "Familiarity breeds contempt." and I tend to agree. My lovely readers, let me remind you that just because you grew up in the same house as someone or raised an individual to adulthood, it does not give you the right to ride roughshod over your host. (or guest.) Do not demand food or drink items. If you have an allergy to something, your family will know that already and plan accordingly. However, if you simply don't enjoy a particular dish...well...simply...don't eat it! Don't whine and complain the whole time. You might think about trying something new or even bringing a (already prepared and ready to serve) dish to share.
As for helping, there are two schools on this. Some love to have all the guests in the kitchen, washing and cooking, so help those hosts. As for me, Stay Out Of My Way! I've been hosting events for years and you are only adding to my stress with "Where should I put this?" and "Do you have a _______?" Sit down and enjoy some time to be pampered.
Don't monopolize the conversation or belittle family members while at their house. (this actually happened to one of my coffee klatsch ladies over the holiday, how horrific!) Age is no excuse. Eight to Eighty, you need to be polite!
Ah, well, without our family, who would we complain about? Just don't do it while at their house!

Keep celebrating!
Did everyone have a pleasant holiday? I certainly did and I am glad it is over! Please don't get me wrong. I love everything about Thanksgiving...no presents to buy, I get along wonderfully with my family and we all enjoy a day to celebrate each other (and food.). It's just so much work and then...it's over and before you can blink, you are out the door to buy, buy, buy.

I, personally, am a cyber-Monday sort of lady. You see, I enjoy my 19th century sensibilities, as long as I can have 21st century conveniences. I went to the large shopping mall on Saturday with my dear husband. Our kids were in a theatrical production until late and we thought it might be a good time to do a bit of purchasing. I was miserable. We just went to a few stores and I was pleading to go back home. It is ever so crowded and gracious manners are so few and far between. (Try a "Thank You" or "Pardon Me", rather than shoving past, it works marvelously.)

As usual, it is easier to shop online. My daughters want makeup, clothes, books. My pre-teen son wants (can you guess? I bet you already did!) Electronics! My nieces want gift cards and my best lady friends get small luxury items that they would not purchase for themselves. All can be, happily, shopped for using that wonderful glowing machine in my family room. Sigh, pass the spiced wine...it's a lovely evening.

Leaves one ever so much more time for planning the next get-together!
It is an old recipe my dear aunt used to make for us. See, my father, God rest his soul, was a bit fussy as a child so my grandmother decided to do without the giblets, which he did not like. The result is this classic recipe. The only thing is, when I wanted to learn to make it, oh, many years ago, my aunt had no recipe. (They never do, do they?) She called me one day and said,
"I'm making the stuffing. Come over and see how."

I did, and it is now in my head, waiting for my daughters to learn. Anyway, this is the recipe. You will note that there are no real measurements, you must go by taste!

1 - 1-1/2 loaf of challah, cut up in cubes and dried over a period of days.
1 -2 sausage rolls. (My hubby likes his stuffing heavy on the sausage, but you decide.)
about 6 ribs of celery - chopped
2 good sized onions - chopped finely
about one stick of butter
about 1 cup hot chicken stock
lots of sage
pepper, salt

Saute celery and onions in about 1/2 stick of butter until soft. Pour into bread cubes. Brown sausage, taking care to smash it so you have small bits of sausage, rather than big hunks. Pour into cubes. Put about 1 or so cups of chicken stock into the pan and scrape up bits of sausage, onion. Heat and pour into cubes. If you need more moisture, continue to add stock. Add sage, pepper, salt. Mix thoroughly. Taste. Add more of what you need. Repeat until you have the flavor you desire. Pour into buttered 9x13" pan. Thanksgiving Day, you place a bit of butter on the top of the stuffing, cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes at about 350 degrees.

I do not stuff the turkey. I used to, but honestly, I just don't like the soggy texture or the idea of eating the stuffing out of the bird. There is also a risk of food poisoning. I understand that you may like the flavor of drippings on the stuffing, but that is easily remedied by substituting drippings from the pan for the butter, when you cook it.
I thought I'd give a list of the products I cannot do without for Thanksgiving.

Challah Bread - makes great dried bread cubes for stuffing!
Frontera Cabernet - wonderful inexpensive wine
Yankee Candle - I love all the festive scents at this time of year. My favorite is Autumn Leaves
Butcher Stores - fresh turkeys are wonderful
The Fresh Market - I love to get my dinner rolls from here. The knot ones are my fav. Not only that, but the atmosphere of the store itself is marvelous. Enough to put anyone in a holiday mood!
Bath House Soaps - after the guests have gone, I'm completely wiped out. The soaps from this company really help me unwind. You can order any scents that thrill you, and bonus, they are really pretty too!
